Clean beauty – How do I start?

Sodium benzoate

Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate

Err what? Just when you thought you were done with lessons in Chemistry huh. But wait, before you turn away, these are actually commonly found in your skincare products. Surprise, surprise.

How many of you have questioned the ingredients used in our skincare, cosmetics, shampoo, conditioner, etc.?

Even for those who did try, most are often overwhelmed by the never-ending list of ingredients with their daunting scientific names (like the ones above).

So should you care? [TLDR: Yes]

Here’s some numbers to put things into perspective:

A typical product can contain anything from 15-50 ingredients, and considering the average woman uses between 9 and 15 personal care products per day, researchers have estimated that, when combined with the addition of perfumes, women place around 515 individual chemicals on their skin each day through cosmetic use.

While no one really knows for sure how certain chemicals affect us over time, or how they react in our bodies in combination – but, one thing we do know… is that what goes ON… goes IN.

If you’re having a tough time knowing where to start, you are not alone. We’ve come up with a simple guide to help kickstart your ‘clean beauty’ regime:

  1. Watch The Story of Cosmetics to know why you should care about what you put ‘on’ your skin.
  2. Go through some of the products you have in your home and lookup for them in EWG for comprehensive analysis of ingredients in your product. Generally, a product rating of 1 – 3 are considered your best choices ;)
  3. Start revamping your routine!

P.S. We are not asking you to throw everything out at once! But start with a few and replace as you go along. Slow and steady lah.

Clean beauty does not have to be complicated and we will try to break it down to you in bite size pieces through this platform, so stay tuned for more!
